LRKC Pet Safety and Oxygen Mask Programs

LRKC PET OXYGEN MASK FUND

In 2007 we started the Pet Oxygen Mask (POM) Fund. These masks are given to local emergency and  rescue departments in the Lakes Region area to aid in resuscitation of small and large animals.

Pet oxygen masks can save pet lives. Increasingly, little oxygen masks for pets are becoming standard equipment for firefighters. Hoping to save cats, dogs and other pets caught in house fires. The Lakes Region Kennel Clubs goal is to equip departments all over the State with them through its fund raising efforts.

The cone-shaped plastic masks, which come in three sizes and fit snugly on snouts, can resuscitate animals suffering from smoke inhalation. They can be used on dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits, guinea pigs, even birds.

Losing a pet in a house fire can be a devastating experience. As most pet owners leave their furry companions home alone when they go to work, pets are left to fend for themselves in the event of a house fire. Although installing 'rescue alert stickers' may seem sufficient to some, the pets life is not assured. Unlike humans looking to run out during fires, pets instinctively look for a hiding place to protect them from the fire.

Over 40,000 pets each year die of smoke asphyxiation. Even if the firemen were able to get pets safely out of the burning structure, they would not be able to revive them without a pet oxygen mask.

The videos below are being used on this site with permission from their producers. Please take a moment to watch them both - they are both moving and informative.

LRKC PET SAFETY EFFORTS

American Red Cross Pet First Aid
In our ongoing effort to help dogs and their owners we will be sponsoring American Red Cross Pet First Aid classes in conjunction with LRG Healthcare starting in 2009!

Pet First Aid is the immediate and temporary care given to an animal until it can be transported to and treated by a veterinarian. Course topics include caring for a pet with a sudden illness such as shock, poisoning and exposure to extremes in temperature. Participants will also learn how to care for respiratory and cardiac emergencies in their pets.

This training can teach you how to:
  • Administer medications;
  • Recognize an emergency;
  • Perform CPR and first aid;
  • Treat common problems and emergencies requiring immediate attention; and
  • Stock a pet first aid kit
For more information on dates/times for the class being offered please visit the calendar page or click the link below.
